PepsiCo India is pioneering several initiatives to replenish water in communities. Our goal is to conserve, replenish and thus offset the water used in our manufacturing process through community water recharge projects and water conservation projects in agriculture. In 2009, the company achieved a significant milestone: Positive Water Balance. Through various initiatives of recharging and replenishing water, it was able to give back to the community more water than it consumed in its manufacturing processes. In 2010, PepsiCo has further increased the amount of water saved and is now water positive by 4.3 billion liter, a fact verified by Deloitte Touche' Tohmatsu India Pvt Ltd.
At PepsiCo India, we see ourselves as an agriculture company. We work closely with farmers to help improve both their livelihoods and agricultural yield. Our journey began with our successful introduction of a high-yielding variety of tomato, and we went on to help paddy farmers increase their crop. Today our ventures into crop diversification and the farming of high-quality potatoes and other edibles have transformed the lives of thousands of Indian farmers. We plan to strengthen farmer connect from 21,000 in 2009 to 50,000 by 2012.
